Round 18 Program Notes

15 Aug 2016 by James King

Today marks the end of the home and away season as our boys travel next door to Ulverstone to take on the Robins in the Central Coast derby. The Robins have proved to be a great outfit in the last two clashes this season and our boys will be looking to turn that around today to gain some full steam ready for finals footy next weekend. Last Saturday was a great day for the club notching up two wins in the Reserves and Seniors against the very talented Latrobe Demons. The Reserves fought it out all game in a tight contest that saw Jake Fielding have a shot after the final siren to kick a goal to what we thought would draw the game, when in actual fact the scoreboard was wrong and we grabbed a one point win to claim top spot on the ladder! Randall Hardy put in a solid performance as he returned from injury and will no doubt be considered to play Seniors again today. The Seniors put together what was thought to be their best game for the year with the likes of Jack Templeton, Damon Smith, Chrissy Mac and Finbar Wray-McCann leading the way with dominance in each of their games. It sure gives the team plenty of confidence for today against the very classy and attacking Robins and into next week for finals. Today will also be the last game for our Under 18’s for season 2016. The boys had a slow start and without doubt improved in leaps and bounds as a unit as the year progressed. A big thanks to coach Matt ‘Sweet’ Carrolan and Tim King for his stand in while Sweet was away.

Congratulations to Chris McDonald on his 150th game for the club today as well as captain Zachary Mihocek on his 50th game. We look forward to many more! (Happy 30th Birthday tomorrow too Macca!)

We would also like to pass on our very best to Jack Eastley as he recovers from a serious leg injury that has unfortunately ended his season. Jack had been in some great form and we sure will miss him out on the field.

We would also like to say thank you and well done to all the Juniors from U/12’s to the U/16’s. It was a great year this year and going by the numbers that were at our dinner last Friday Penguin Junior football is looking very promising. A big thanks to all the volunteers that helped out this year and a big thanks to all the sponsors that were able to help this year as well. Our Best and Fairest and Runner-Up’s this year were: in the U/16’s – Lachlan Mckellar and Tim Haberle Runner-Up. In the U/14’s – Eric Mathews and Ben Callaghan Runner-Up. In the U/12’s – Declan Keogh with Joel Mcdonald and Jakeb Townsend joint Runner-Up’s. Great effort boys. Also a big thanks to all the coaches: Ian Townsend, Scotty De Groot, Finbar Wray-McCann and Zachary Mihocek. We are certainly looking forward to seeing you all next year.

All the best to our teams today and we look forward to seeing you at finals cheering our boys on!

GO TWO BLUES!
