Finals Round 1 Program Notes

15 Aug 2016 by James King

Another home and away season done and dusted and it’s great to have two teams right in the thick of the action of finals footy. The Under 18’s finished their season last week with a solid performance against 3rd placed Ulverstone. They improved tremendously this year under Matt Carrolan’s tutelage with the highlights coming in Round 5’s 21-point win over the Giants and even more so when they knocked off 5th placed Devonport in Round 15. They had solid contributions all year from Jordan Boddan down back, Corey Rockliff through the middle and big Dylan Bramich up forward. The Reserves and Seniors both finished off their roster seasons with solid wins over Ulverstone last week. The Reserves cemented top spot on the ladder ensuring they would get this week off. They were down by a point at half time but kicked five goals to one in the second half and will now play the winner of Latrobe and Ulverstone next week for a spot in the Grand Final.

Today the Seniors will face Ulverstone for the second week in a row. The team will be sure to take confidence out of last weeks 19-point win and will look to the back six, led by Finbar Wray-McCann, to again nullify Ulverstone’s forward line. Chris McDonald kicked 3 vital goals in his 150th Penguin Senior game last week, including one superb left foot snap from the boundary, and will be sure to be a threat again today. Ben Hardy also gave us one his trademark booming left foot goals from 50 metres out in front of the Ulverstone Clubrooms. Had he and Chris been in Penguin they would’ve been closely contested for Can Bar Goal of the Year.

Congratulations to Jacob Brown who today plays his 100th Senior game. Jacob played extremely well last week to be one of our best, and he also kicked a miraculous snap from the Ulverstone can bar pocket for goal. Unfortunately he was in the wrong suburb to be nominated for the Can Bar Goal of the Year but a great effort none the less. Here’s hoping his form continues to help get us the win today.

Go Two Blues!
